In this work Jean is looking at human interactions in a culturally diverse environment. It follows a quest for identity and common values; exploring the human capacity to change, adapt and merge. In Hibrido (portuguese for Hybrid) Jean started his investigation toward a movement language that merges Latin American influences with more Western dance styles. The duet explores the concept of what happens when you pick up two very different people and place them inside a box? The performers start the piece from the perspective that they can not initially see one another, only feel each other's presence in the space. The movement material evolves from attraction to repulsion, inter-dependency to isolation.
Hibrido was Jean Abreu's choreographic debut and was originally commissioned by Yorkshire Dance in Leeds - UK with support of FLAME (Friends of Latin American Expression). This intense 20 min duet was first performed as part of Resolution at The Place Theatre in London in 2003.
Hibrido earned Jean national and international acclaim and went on to perform as part of Juli Dans Festival in Amsterdam, Jung Hound festival in Germany, Palermo residency performance - Italy and the international showcase British Dance Edition. Hibrido also won the company's first Choreographic Award from the Jerwood Foundation.
"Abreu has an easy flow of movement, giving a velvety softness to his most jagged poses."
The Independent
"Remarkably, this was Abreu’s first attempt at choreography and is one of the most promising debuts I can remember at Resolution!"
